Aug 8th/2025 Fibre Before Form - From Harvest to Hand

CA$100.00

Date: August 8, 2025

Where: Food Culture Place HQ

Time: 9am- 12 noon

“A slower pace of life and a deeper sense of meaning”

An opportunity to weave with your hands while unwinding your mind.

Before we sit down to weave, a good understanding of the materials and tools required is key. Fibre Before Form is a 3-hour immersive workshop designed to introduce you to the foundational knowledge behind traditional basket weaving.

During our day, we’ll explore how to respectfully harvest wild materials, when and how to collect them, and how to process and store them for future use.

We’ll walk through the types of tools—both traditional and modern—you may want in your toolkit, and take a close look at a variety of wild and cultivated weaving materials like wild willow, our native red osier dogwood, white birch bark, grasses, and more.

You’ll learn soaking and mellowing techniques, how to source materials if you’re not harvesting yourself, and gain an understanding of simple patterns and techniques that can be used with wild-gathered fibres to get you started.

Together we will all make a round base to get you started but more than anything you will have spent the morning immersed in the land, weaving and unwinding.
