At Food Culture Place, we are dedicated to preserving the heritage skills that define Newfoundland’s cultural identity. Basket weaving, once a vital craft for practical survival, has been recognized as at risk in Newfoundland and Labrador. Historically, this skill was essential for making tools like fishing creels and berry-picking baskets, reflecting the resourcefulness of those who lived off the land and sea.

Through our Crafts at Risk Workshops, we work to keep this traditional art alive, ensuring it thrives not just as a skill but as a cultural connection to our past. By teaching and celebrating these techniques, we honor the legacy of those who came before us while inspiring future generations to embrace and cherish this important part of our heritage.
